You have had a chance to look over the basic woodburning tool and learn a few tips about using the burner in The Basic Woodburning Tool.  The second part of this series, Basic Woodburning Strokes and Textures, showed some of the different effects you can create with your tool.

Here we will look at how these ideas apply to a carved scene or woodburning pattern.

The Mountain Goat has been carved on a 3/4" basswood oval plaque.  Once the carving was completed each area was carefully rounded and smoothed to give an even surface for the woodburning details.

Except for a very few areas the woodburning for this project has been restricted to fine, medium, and heavy line work using the tip's blade.  Very fine hair line strokes cover the mussel, eye, and forehead areas of the goat.  Medium length lines, just a tone or so darker than the first, are used to create the cheek, ear, and mouth regions of the face. His wonderful flowing beard and neck bib are done with long heavy line work.

Around the eyes, nose, mouth, and horns I have added some darker shading using either the dot pattern with the tip's point or with graduated shading and the tip's side.

The sample of the Wood Spirit is done on a 3/4" White Pine board with routed edges and is created completely with the wood burning tool.  Note the change of color in the grain of the pine that runs through the center of the work.

The majority of this project was done using the graduated shading with the tip's side.  Each leaf and beard section was carefully toned with the burner to make dark shadows close to the face that lighten as they move toward the edge of the work.  The background has been done with heavy dots to give a nice black look for contrast.

A small amount of titanium white and red oxide oil paint has been used to color the leaf ribs and the base of the horns after the burning was finished.

Our Eagle, Shield, and Sword plaque is done on 3/4" butternut boards.  This one includes a wide variety of strokes.  This design uses both fine lines and shading to complete a very detailed, realistic look.  The close-up shows areas of different strokes.
